Safety Gear

Gear I Recommend Keeping Close

Training is what saves lives. But the right gear in your pocket or glove box makes it easier to act without hesitating. These are the items I recommend to my students.

What's in the kit

Car & home

Adult & Infant CPR Mask Kit

Two CPR masks with one-way valves, gloves and alcohol prep pads in a red zip pouch with a belt clip.

Why I like it: a full pocket mask gives a better seal for rescue breaths than a flat shield, and the bright red pouch is easy to find in a hurry.

Keychain CPR Face Shield, 3-Pack

Three small pouches, each with a CPR face shield and nitrile gloves, on a key ring.

Why I like it: it's always with you. One for your keys, one for the car, one for a family member's bag.

Mylar Emergency Blankets, 4-Pack

Four individually packed thermal blankets that fold down smaller than a deck of cards.

Why I like it: someone who is injured or in shock loses body heat fast, especially in a Vermont or New Hampshire winter. These take up almost no room.

Tips from the instructor

Don't let gear stop you

No mask? Do Hands-Only CPR. Pushing hard and fast on the chest is what matters most for an adult who collapses. Here's how.

Know where it is

Gear buried under the spare tire won't help. Keep it in the glove box or door pocket, and tell your family where it is.

Check it once a year

Gloves and adhesives wear out in hot cars. Pick a date, like when you change your clocks, and replace anything torn or old.

Coming soon

Car trauma kit: trauma shears, a pressure bandage and a genuine tourniquet. Home & workplace kit: a complete first aid kit. I'm only adding gear I'd trust in a real emergency, so these are on the way.

Gear is good. Knowing how to use it is better.
